Col Tag: Create Columns

1:  Overview

The <col> element can be added to any question type to create column headers and expand the number of selections available in a question.

<checkbox label="Q1">
  <title>
      Question
  </title>
  <comment>Please select all that apply</comment>
  <row label="r1">Row 1</row>
  <row label="r2">Row 2</row>
  <row label="r3">Row 3</row>
  <col label="c1">Col 1</col>
  <col label="c2">Col 2</col>
  <col label="c3">Col 3</col>
</checkbox>

The code above produces the following result:

2:  Attributes

In addition to the Cell Attributes available, the following attributes are unique to the <col> element and may only be applied within a <checkbox> question type:

2.1:  favorite - Change the Checkbox Question Style

The favorite attribute is a boolean value that adds special functionality to an entire column.

Instead of displaying checkboxes, the column will appear as radio inputs and remain disabled until the corresponding selection has been made in the previous column.

When applying the favorite attribute, you should respect the following restrictions:

  • The question must be grouped by columns (e.g. grouping="cols")
  • There must be at least 2 <row> elements present
  • There must be exactly 2 <col> elements present
  • The second <col> element must be the one with favorite="1" specified

For example:

<checkbox label="Q1" grouping="cols">
  <title>
      Which items are you aware of and which of them is your favorite?
  </title>
  <row label="r1">Item 1</row>
  <row label="r2">Item 2</row>
  <row label="r3">Item 3</row>
  <col label="c1">Heard of</col>
  <col label="c2" favorite="1">My Favorite!</col>
</checkbox>

2.2:  radio - Change a Column to Single-Select Inputs

The radio attribute is a boolean value that forces the entire column to use radio inputs instead of checkboxes.

No matter what question grouping is set, only one selection can be made for the entire column when radio="1" is specified.

For example:

<checkbox label="Q1" atleast="1" grouping="cols">
  <title>
    Which of these items have you used, used most recently and is your favorite?
  </title>
  <row label="r1">Item 1</row>
  <row label="r2">Item 2</row>
  <row label="r3">Item 3</row>
  <col label="c1">Used this</col>
  <col label="c2" radio="1">Most recently used this</col>
  <col label="c3" radio="1">My Favorite!</col>
</checkbox>
