Video Player (YouTube/Vimeo) Element

1:  Video Player (YouTube/Vimeo) Overview

This video player element allows you to quickly add videos to your survey from popular hosting services, such as YouTube or Vimeo. No additional Decipher fees apply to play these videos as part of your survey experience to the respondent. This element utilizes number form, capturing the number of seconds the respondent stays on the page.

The following is an example of the Video Player (YouTube/Vimeo) Element.

2.1:  Copying the Embed Link

Next you'll have to locate and copy the embed link for your video. We explain how to do this for YouTube and Vimeo below.

2.1.1:  YouTube

In YouTube, locate the desired video. In the menu below the video, click on "Share," then select "Embed" and there will be a link. Before copying the link, select the video size and adjust the settings offered by YouTube. Then, copy the entire link.

The video size should fit within the survey page, so it's optimal to keep the width at 900px or smaller.
By default, the "Show suggested videos when video finishes" setting is enabled by YouTube. Uncheck if you do not want video suggestions shown at the end.

2.1.2:  Vimeo

In Vimeo, locate the desired video. Hover over the video and the sharing option will appear. Click on "Share."

In the sharing window, click on the "Show options" link to access all of the settings. Before copying the link, select the video size and adjust the settings offered by Vimeo. Then, copy the entire embed link.

The video size should fit within the survey page, so it's optimal to keep the width at 900px or smaller.

3:  Configure the Style Settings

To link to the video and configure the display settings for the element, click the "Style: Video Player (YouTube/Vimeo)" link.

The "Question Display Options" window will appear.

Additional information about each feature will appear when you mouse-over the text.

  • Embed Link:  (Required) Enter the iframe embed link copied from YouTube or Vimeo in this field.

Click "Preview" to preview the settings. Once the changes are made, click "Save."

4:  Considerations & Limitations

Even with "Must Watch Video" enabled, a respondent may fast forward to the end and not watch the entire video. Unless Vimeo or Youtube offer a setting to disable the controls, there's no way to prevent this.

Solutions:

  • Use the data captured to identify respondents who spent a shorter amount of time on the page.
  • Consider using the Video Player Element instead.

HTTP

  • Only works on HTTP protocol. The API calls used require that HTTP be used.

Smartphone/Tablet

  • YouTube/Vimeo appear to support
  • Will allow all controls currently seen on the standard video provider's website (i.e., pause, replay, fast forward, etc.)

Desktop

  • It's recommended that Flash is detected in the survey. The extra variable "flashDetected" may be used to capture the setting. While these video hosting services offer HTML5 fallback, not all browsers support HTML5 players (e.g., IE8, IE9). This will help debug issues.
