Testing an Online Survey

The survey testing system allows you to review your survey and carefully check each question for errors before it goes live. It's designed to show you every detail of the survey including the field settings and extra variables that are hidden to respondents. You can check the logic, skip paths, question settings and text. The survey testing toolbar allows you to make direct text changes as well as add setting changes for our programmers to review and update. You can also test the survey as the respondents will see it, with the structural elements and toolbar  hidden.

1:  Access/Configure the Testing Environment

To access the manual testing tools, select "Test Survey" in the "Test" menu in the research hub or survey editor.

A window will appear allowing you to choose your testing environment.

The Survey testing environment allows you configure the following settings (where applicable) when testing your survey:

Note: not all of the settings may be available depending on your project (i.e., if you have not added multiple languages to your project, then you won’t be able to adjust that setting in the testing environment).

1. Sample Source:  Select a sample source
2. Sample Source Variables:  Enter a value for the variable(s) for the selected sample source
3. Language:  Select a language to view
4. Global Variables:  Enter a value for the global variable
5. Survey Link:  Review the survey link being tested. The link is automatically updated with any variable specified.
6. Send Link to Phone:  Allows you to send the test link to any US or Canadian phone number via SMS.
7. Show Respondent View:  Select to view the survey as respondents will see it, with elements like quotas and skips hidden.
8. Show Survey with Tools: Select to include hidden elements and the testing toolbar in your survey view.

2:  Viewing the Survey Testing Environment

Once you’re done configuring your survey, you can choose which testing view you’d like to apply:

2.1:  Show Respondent View:

Select to view the survey as respondents see it, with elements like quotas and skips hidden.

2.2:  Show Survey With Tools

Select to include hidden elements and the testing toolbar in your survey view.

2.2.1:  Survey Testing Tools

The following tools are available when you select Show Survey with Tools.

  1. Survey Mode: Indicates the mode the survey is in (i.e., testing, live or closed).

  2. Tasks: Allows you to enter feedback or changes for a question.

  3. Edit: Allows you to edit and format the survey text.

  4. Recorder: Tracks the last survey path taken during testing, (i.e., the questions viewed and how they were answered).

  5. QA Codes: Allows you to turn on/off the QA codes, the default setting is off. The codes include question labels, settings, conditions and the "answer for me" button.

  6. One Page: Allows you to turn on/off the one page setting; the default setting is off. When on, the entire survey appears in the window. Page breaks are indicated by dotted lines.

  7. Spell Check: When "On", all translatable text on the page is checked for spelling errors. Misspelled words are highlighted in yellow.

  8. Actions Menu: When clicked a pop-up menu appears that contains useful links. From here you can restart the survey, access the Knowledge Base, jump to the research hub or log out.

  9. Quick Links Menu: This menu allows you to easily navigate through the different phases of your project, from building and testing to reviewing the report and downloading your data.
