Create and Upload a Weighting Scheme

Overview

Crosstabs uses Random Iterative Method (RIM) Weighting to apply weighting schemes to data. RIM Weighting allows researchers to adjust multiple characteristics in a dataset while keeping the different characteristics of the data itself proportionate as a whole. This means that you can run separate weights by data subsets and tailor your weighting schemes by wave, country, or any other data segment available within your survey.

There are two options for adding RIM Weighting to your survey data: by selecting questions and assigning weighting percentages to each response in the provided tool or by uploading a pre-designed weighting file.

This article details how to create and upload a weighting scheme into Crosstabs. Click here if you would like to learn more about applying a weighting variable directly from Crosstabs.

1:  Creating a Tab-Delimited Weighting Scheme

1.1:  File Requirements & Setup

The weighting scheme must be in a .txt file in tab-delimited format (meaning each item in a row is separated by a tab). The first row of the file is the header and must contain labels for the following columns:

  • The first column must be labeled with the variable name "uuid".
  • If you are only applying one weight, the second column must be labeled "weight".
  • If you are applying more than one weight, see the instructions in section 1.2.

Note: The uploader is case-sensitive.

The first column must contain the values you wish to match (uuids). The "weight" column must contain the numeric weights you wish to assign to those records, from 0.0 up to any factor.

This example shows a weighting scheme with one weight variable matched up to uuid.

1.2:  Applying Multiple Weight Variables

The weighting scheme must be in a .txt file in tab-delimited format (meaning each item in a row is separated by a tab). The first row of the file is the header and must contain labels for the following columns:

  • The first column must be labeled with a variable name "uuid".
  • If you are applying more than one weight, the second, third, etc., columns must be labeled "weight_x", where x is a unique name for each weight.
    • E.g., "weight_global", "weight_local", "weight_special"

Note: The uploader is case-sensitive and does not accept spaces in the header labels.

The first column must contain the values you wish to match (uuids). The weight columns must contain the numeric weights you wish to assign to those records, from 0.0 up to any factor.

2:  Uploading the Weighting Scheme

Once you've prepared your tab-delimited weighting file, there are 2 locations where you can upload the file:

Open the settings for the crosstab. Under "Weighting," click on "Upload".

Or, in the "Actions" menu (available after you've run the crosstab), select "Upload Weighting Scheme."

Click "Choose File" and select the file on your computer.

Then click "Upload" to upload the selected file.

If the file doesn't contain any errors you will receive the "Success!" notification. Click "Done" to save the weighting scheme and return to Crosstabs.

2.1:  Trouble-shooting Upload Errors

If the file contains errors or invalid values you will receive the "Error!" notification, along with an explanation of the issue.

Possible problems to look for in your file:

  • The "weight" label must be lowercase.
  • Confirm you are using the valid identifier variable "uuid".
  • Variable names (i.e., header labels) cannot contain spaces. Use an underscore (_) in place of a space.
  • Confirm that every weight column has a corresponding header label.
  • The headers must be alpha-numeric.

Once you've reviewed the message, click the "X" to close the message and upload a new weighting scheme. Alternatively, you can select "Close" to exit the uploader.

3:  Applying a Weighting Scheme

Once you've uploaded a weighting scheme, the weighting options from your file are available in "Settings," under "Weighting."

3.1:  Global Weighting

To apply a weighting scheme in Crosstabs, open the "Settings" and select the desired weighting scheme from the "Weighting" menu. Then click "Apply."

3.2:  Per Segment Weighting

To apply a weighting scheme to individual segments, open the "Settings" and select "Per Segment Weighting" in the "Weighting" menu. The weighting menu will appear for each segment in the crosstab preview. Select the desired weighting scheme for each segment, then click "Apply."
