Fulcrum Supply Integration Guide

This document is a quick start guide to assist you in leveraging Federated Sample’s Fulcrum router directly from Kinesis Panel version 4.3. Kinesis Panel has integrated functionalities for using the Fulcrum router in multiple ways, such as:

  • Selling sample though Fulcrum
  • Using Fulcrum to route between your own company’s internal projects, or only to selected company’s projects
  • Using Fulcrum to provide your disqualified panelists with a second chance to complete a project
  • Routing idle panelists to Fulcrum in order to monetize them

If you need help with setup at any time during the process, feel free to contact Federated Sample Technical Support for any Fulcrum-related questions and Kinesis Technical Support for any Kinesis-related questions.

1:  Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have completed the Fulcrum Training Course offered by Federated Sample. This quick start guide assumes that you are already set up as sample supplier in Fulcrum. In order to integrate Kinesis Panel to Fulcrum, you will need the following from Federated Sample:

  1. A Fulcrum API key
  2. An Untargeted entry link
  3. Redirect links adjusted to integration redirects
  4. Supplier ID

Once you have received all the information above, it is time to set up in Kinesis. Please follow the chapters below to learn the entire process step by step.

2:  Enabling Fulcrum Integration in Kinesis Panel

2.1:  Connect Panel With a Fulcrum Supplier Account

First, enable Fulcrum for the desired panels in Kinesis. Enter the Kinesis system and go to My panel > Edit properties for an existing panel or My panel > Create new panel for a new panel.

Go to External services and fill in the fields shown below:

First, Enable Fulcrum by clicking Yes, which will open a list of fields.

2.1.1:  Fulcrum Link

This is the URL that Kinesis Panel uses to send targeted panelists into Fulcrum.

While you are testing out the integration, the link to the staging environment:

When you are ready to launch real respondents, the link to the production environment:

2.1.2:  Fulcrum Untargeted Link

Enter the Fulcrum untargeted router link that you can copy from Fulcrum SUPPLY > Suppliers > View Supplier Link List > Link as shown below.

Copy the link and remove everything after the SID -parameter. Example link:

Optionally you may append an extra &SUMSTAT=1 parameter at the end that provides you summary and debug screens while testing. Appending &FIRID=MSDHONI7 will bypass security while testing. Example link:

2.1.3:  Fulcrum Salt

The “Fulcrum salt” string entered in Kinesis Panel must match the "Secret Key" setting in Fulcrum SUPPLY > Routing Preferences > Encryption. This string is used to secure links from and to the Fulcrum router. Kinesis requires the encryption on an outgoing variable to be turned on using “hash” as incoming variable name. Enabling encryption on incoming variables is also recommended. Additionally it is recommend to select a salt that is least at least 8 characters long and contains alphanumeric and special characters.

2.1.4:  Points Exchange Rate

Enter the amount of points that equal 1 USD. This value is only used for reporting.

2.1.5:  Fulcrum Compensation Grid

The Fulcrum compensation grid in Kinesis allows you to specify rewards points based on the Length of Interview (LoI). This functionality replaces the normal rewards points distribution method within Kinesis Panel.

The LoI is retrieved from the information that is sent back to Kinesis Panel by the Fulcrum Router. Enter the amount of points you want to issue for each the three potential project completion return statuses (completed, profile terminated, quota terminated). Use the "Add" and "Remove" buttons to adjust the entries to your needs. The lowest LOI must always be zero. This should be consistent with your settings in SUPPLY > Routing Preferences > Price Grid.

2.1.6:  Fulcrum API Mode

Use this setting to toggle between using the Fulcrum production (live) or the staging (test) environment.

2.1.7:  Fulcrum API Key

The Fulcrum API key must use the following format: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.

2.2:  Setting up Fulcrum Redirect Links

Fulcrum supplier return links must be set up in order for the integration to work properly. This task must be carried out by the supplier, but is covered in training. Federated Sample technical support can answer any questions you may have about this process. While it is possible to edit redirects per project, there should not be any need to do so once the global links are set up.

Example return links:

===Default/Failure/Quality Term===[%PID%]&MID=[%MID%]&tsfn=[%TSFN%]&tssn=[%TSSN%]&cost=[%COST%]&rssn=[%RSSN%]&rsfn=[%RSFN%]&tsfloi=[%TSFLOI%]&rsfloi=[%RSFLOI%]&initialstatus=[%InitialStatus%]&KID=[%KID%]

3:  Connecting Panelist Data With Fulcrum Standard Questions

3.1:  Creating Fulcrum Standard Questions as Datapoints

Once Fulcrum is enabled on Kinesis Panel, you will need to connect existing panelist data points to predefined Fulcrum standard quota questions.

In the panel mode, select Panel functions > Datapoint manager. Here, you can add, modify and delete data points. If an existing data point cannot be mapped or does not exist in the panel, you will need to either reprofile your panelists or convert an existing datapoint to the correct format that corresponds to desired Fulcrum Standard Question. The conversion is best done by first exporting the source datapoints, performing an offline data conversion to Fulcrum Standard Question format, and re-importing data.

The following Fulcrum Standard Questions are supported by Kinesis Panel.

  • AGE
  • HHI (Annual Household Income)
  • ZIP
  • DMA

The REGION, STATE, and DMA are automatically calculated as long as the ZIP Postal Code system field is mapped to a valid datapoint containing a panelist’s ZIP codes. This currently applies to US geography only.

3.2:  Mapping Existing Data points to Fulcrum Standard Questions

Next, connect your data points as Fulcrum Standard Questions by selecting the dropdowns under Fulcrum mapping on the right-hand side of the screen as displayed below. Only radio and open-end question types can be mapped to Fulcrum data points – checkbox and date question types will not be available for mapping.

Kinesis Panel will always supply all mapped Fulcrum data points to the router to improve the panelist experience and provide the most accurate targeting available, thereby avoiding unnecessary profiling questions presented by the Fulcrum router.

Kinesis System Field and Fulcrum mappings can be done concurrently. When a Fulcrum mapping is selected for a radio question, a confirmation popup is displayed to verify that the choice options correspond to those used in the Fulcrum Standard Question.

4:  Sending Untargeted Sample into Fulcrum

Sending untargeted sample means sending sample into the Fulcrum Exchange without specifying a specific target study. There are multiple ways to send panelists in the router as untargeted sample.

  • By using the automated sampling feature in Fulcrum Exchange
  • By building and sending sample manually
  • By sending sample via the “Second chance” feature

In order to leverage sending untargeted sample, a correct “Fulcrum untargeted link” must be set up in the panel properties.

4.1:  Automated Sampling Using Fulcrum Exchange

4.1.1:  Creating a Fulcrum Exchange Qualifier

The purpose of the Fulcrum Exchange qualifier is to define a segment of your panel to make available for the Fulcrum Exchange automatic sampling feature. This step is optional and should only be completed should the panel owner wants to use the automatic sampling feature.

The Fulcrum Exchange qualifier is a standard panel query which is created exactly the same way as any other query in Kinesis Panel. To create a Fulcrum Exchange qualifier, you must enter panel mode. Click on Panel functions > Query panel -> Create and create a query that matches the panelists that you would like to keep available for the Fulcrum Exchange. For example, you might want to send underutilized panelists to the Fulcrum Exchange for additional opportunities to keep them engaged and to earn more revenue.  Example use case

Include all panelists between ages 35-45 who have not participated in a survey in the past three weeks.

Next, save the query and exit the Query Builder. Then, right click the newly create query and select the option “Set as Fulcrum Exchange qualifier”. To remove the Fulcrum Exchange qualifier (indicated by the F-icon), simply right click and select "Unset as Fulcrum Exchange qualifier."

The currently active Fulcrum Exchange qualifier appears in the magic folder on left. Currently, only one query can be active and set as a Fulcrum Exchange qualifier.

4.1.2:  Enabling and Configuring Automated Sampling

In order to enable the automatic sampling feature within the Fulcrum Exchange, you must first create at least one Fulcrum Exchange qualifier query. This is done in Panel Functions -> Query Panel.

In panel mode, click on Panel Functions -> Fulcrum exchange.  Enable Fulcrum Exchange

Click “Yes” to turn on the automatic sampling. Once enabled, the system will periodically determine which panelists to invite to participate based on the other settings.  Fulcrum Exchange Qualifier

The panelists returned by this query are the ones who can receive an invitation to participate. Only the queries that are set as the Fulcrum Exchange Qualifier will be available in this drop-down menu. The Fulcrum Exchange queries are created in the panel mode simply by using the Query Builder tool and then marking them as Fulcrum Exchange Qualifiers. Currently, the system only supports using one qualifier.

Daily Invitation Limit Enter the maximum number of panelists Kinesis should send over to Fulcrum Exchange daily. The default setting of 0 represents means that there is no daily limit and that everybody matching the Fulcrum Exchange qualifier will receive an invitation each day.  Runtime

Enter a time span when the emails should be sent out. The system will send out invitations once per hour and adjust the wave-size according to the daily invitation limit. The scheduler times are based on the user’s timezone preferences in Settings & tools > My account.  Invitation Expiration Time

Set a value for many days the invitation is valid, after which it will expire. Panelists clicking an expired link will see the "Link expired" landing page.  Allow Re-invite After

Specify the earliest time a panelist can receive another invitation.

4.1.3:  Customizing email invitations

Select “Invitation” from the left sidebar to customize your Fulcrum Exchange email invitation. Customization options include subject, reply-to address, and the body of your email invitation. This email invitation uses a template defined in the Community Manager -> Email templates.

Please note that placeholders for your survey link (%LINK%) and an opt-out link (%OPTOUTLINK%) are required in your Fulcrum email template. Also, there is no longer functionality to include rewards points in the email invitation as the rewards points will vary based on the LOI of the completed survey.

4.2:  Building and Sending Sample Manually

4.2.1:  Project Setup

Sometimes you want to handle sampling manually, especially if the screener questions are complex or perhaps you do not have matching data points available in your panel.

Select My Project -> Edit properties to see the Project Properties page. First select “Yes” to enable Fulcrum integration.

You can use any of the 3 methods to send in sample:

  • Click on the button to select a Fulcrum survey from the list
  • Send panelist through Fulcrum Exchange (no targeted survey)
  • By entering the Fulcrum survey number manually

4.2.2:  Sampling and Invitations

Once you have a new project created click on Invitations -> New campaign to create a new invitation campaign.

In order to handle the sampling manually, simply do not enable any qualifications or quotas in the Campaign Manager wizard when creating a new campaign. This will result in an empty campaign to which you can add sample manually. Kinesis Panel will automatically include any mapped Fulcrum datapoints as parameters.

To add sample to your existing campaign, click the “Invitation” line and select the “Add sample to this campaign” option.

You can repeat these sampling steps for all the quota cells and demographics you would like to supply to this project.

4.2.3:  Sending Sample Via The “Second Chance” Feature

Panelist activity and engagement is driven by how often they qualify and complete surveys. However, strict quotas or stringent screeners can often force you to turn willing participants away. With Fulcrum Exchange, the panelist can be offered a “second chance” should they not qualify for a standard non-Fulcrum project in Kinesis Panel.

When working with any standard Invitation Campaign in Kinesis Panel, the second chance offer can be enabled simply by checking the “Offer second chance to participate in Fulcrum Exchange” box in the campaign properties as illustrated below:

5:  Sending Targeted Sample

Sending targeted sample means sending sample to a specific study into Fulcrum. There are two different study types in Fulcrum and these are:

  • Studies listed on OfferWall (open to anyone who wishes to send sample)
  • Studies that you are given specific quota allocation to (Invite only)

There are 3 different ways to send targeted sample into Fulcrum:

  • Target a specific study listed on the Offerwall
  • Target given allocations
  • Target a specific Fulcrum survey number and sample manually

5.1:  Creating a New Fulcrum Project

When creating a new project, or if you already have an existing project, select My Project -> Edit properties to see the Project Properties page. First select “Yes” to enable Fulcrum integration and to show options below.

Typically you would click on the “Select survey from list” button to open up a list of available projects in Fulcrum. If you would like handle the entire sampling process manually, start by entering the Fulcrum survey number. The system will now allow you to obtain sample manually. Click on the green “Check” button and Kinesis Panel will verify that the entered Fulcrum survey number exists. If it does not exist, the field will turn red.

5.2:  Creating a New Invitation campaign

Select Invitations > New campaign to create a new invitation campaign. The Campaign Wizard will guide you through several steps for creating, customizing and scheduling your survey invitation.

The second to last step in this process allows you to select your qualifying sample. Two options are available to obtain sample:

  1. Using Qualifications alone
  2. Using both Qualifications and Quotas for more accurate targeting

Kinesis Panel will automatically attempt to estimate the number of invitation needed to satisfy each qualification or quota cell. This number is indicated as “Calculated target”. Once the campaign has been saved Kinesis Panel will automatically build samples that match the selected demographics and send out the invitations.

If you wish to bypass the automatic sampling feature built into the campaign and do manual sampling instead, simply don’t enable any qualifications or quotas. This will result into an empty campaign where you can Query the panel and create the samples manually for this campaign.

5.3:  Rewards Messaging to Respondents

Respondents should be informed in the invitation email that the reward points they receive will be based on the LoI of the survey that they complete. It is recommended that you avoid listing a single incentive value, as you would typically do with non-Fulcrum integrated projects.

5.4:  Dealing with unsupported qualifications and quotas

Kinesis Panel supports the most frequently used Fulcrum standard questions as outlined in the chapter Mapping existing data points to Fulcrum Standard Questions. Sometimes you may run into Fulcrum projects that utilize qualification and quotas using Fulcrum Standard Questions that are either not supported by Kinesis Panel or not mapped by you.

These Fulcrum Standard Questions are displayed with a red exclamation icon as illustrated above. In the example, Kinesis Panel doesn’t support the “STANDARD CHILDREN HOUSEHOLD” question and therefore, utilizing the automated sampling feature is not possible. If you wish to send sample regardless, i.e., using similar data points that already exist in your panel, you must perform the sampling manually by first obtaining samples and scheduling them using the campaign manager. If you would like to use this manual sampling process, simply accept the screen without enabling any of the qualifications or quotas. This results to an empty campaign which you can add samples obtained from the Query Builder.

5.5:  Managing Fulcrum Sampling

Once you have created an Invitation Campaign, click on the Manage Sampling button to decrease or increase the number of invitations that are sent out. This enables you to adjust and manage the automatic sampling in the same way as you did in the Campaign Wizard when you first created the campaign.

If you are managing sampling manually you would still use the “Manage Sampling” button to monitor quotas in order to be able to target manually.

5.6:  Maximizing Sample Revenue Through OfferWall

OfferWall projects are open to everybody in the Fulcrum Exchange. The sampling procedure is exactly the same as for targeted projects selected from the Allocations tab.

All OfferWall projects are listed on the screen, next to projects using allocations. Simply click on the project you would like to send sample to and this will open up another screen where you can obtain detailed information about qualification and quotas.

The OfferWall selection screen details the following information on available surveys:

  • Survey Name: The name of the available survey in OfferWall
  • Account Name: The account listing associated with the survey
  • Language: The primary language for the survey
  • Industry: The targeted industry for the survey
  • LOI: Length of interview
  • CPI: Cost per interview
  • Completes: Current number of completes
  • Remaining: Desired number of completes remaining
