Survey Reporting

This article is designed to provide an overview of what survey reporting tools are available and what they are used for. While this guide is not meant to be comprehensive, it does include links to individual articles providing more detailed explanations on how to use specific features. Be sure to review these articles as needed when pulling survey data.

1:  Reporting Tools

Kinesis Survey offers a suite of reporting tools, all of which are listed below. The two most widely used tools are topline reports and raw data exporter. All tools are very easy to use, with point & click functionality, and can be customized via export methods, filters, and time range constraints. Full details on each reporting tool are available via the links below.

  • Survey Frequencies
    This report provides a break down of survey traffic over the life of the project. Reports can be printed on screen or exported via Excel. Multiple reports are generated, including:
    • Respondent activity frequencies per date: provides an overview of total survey traffic per date, broken down by respondent status (completed, profile, quota, dropout)
    • Respondent activity frequencies: provides a breakdown of total traffic by respondent status
    • Response frequencies per question: the number of responses each question has received, broken down by respondent status. This chart is used most often to find where respondents are dropping out. Typically, you should see a high number of dropouts at the beginning of the survey, with the number tapering off towards the end. Should you see a question with a high number of dropouts followed by questions with 0 dropouts, that is a good indication that there is something wrong with a question in your survey.
    • Validation error frequencies per question: the number of error messages triggered on each question. Please note that this is not the number of respondents who triggered an error message, but the total number of error messages triggered. It is possible that one respondent can trigger multiple error messages on the same question.
    • Termination frequencies per question: provides information on the last question to be answered by profiles, quotas, and completes. This tool is particularly useful for checking where respondents are screening out or quota terminating.
  • Topline Report
    This report contains the number of answers and skips for each question plus frequencies and errors for multiple choice questions. Error margins are calculated by using 95% confidence value (z=1.96) Margin of Error Formula. Numeric responses also contain min, max, mean, and standard deviation. Topline reports can be exported to the screen, Excel, or Power Point.
  • Card Sort Analysis
    Card sort reports are available for card sort questions only. No reports will be available if the survey does not have a card sort question with data in it. Multiple reports can be created:
    • Choices x Categories:displays how many times each choice was placed in each category
    • Choices x Choices:displays how many times each choice was placed in the same category with another choice
    • Hierarchical Cluster Analysis:clusters choices based on the distance between choices using single linkage, complete linkage, or average linkage.
    • Multidimensional Scaling:provides a visual representation of the closeness of items
  • Charts and Statistics
    Similar to Topline, Charts and Stats provides frequency information for each question. In addition, charts can be generated and exported via Excel or saved as an image file. This tool is typically used to get a quick glance at how data for a particular question is filling in.
  • Drill Down
    Displays non-aggregate data that can be edited or removed via the UI. This tool is typically used during survey testing as it allows for easy changing of answers for testing conditional logic, but can also be used to correct respondent data if needed. Please be aware that any changes made within drill down to data are permanent.
  • Cross Tabs
    A simple cross tabulation tool that allows you to create a banner and target questions. Please note that the banner options cannot be edited.
  • Advanced Cross Tabs
    This tool allows you to create custom banners and to turn banner options on or off. Once a banner is created, you can create an unlimited number of cross tab reports to which you can apply sorting rules and significance testing. Please note that when building banners, options may not be combined/recoded.
  • Raw Data Exporter
    This tool allows you to export your non-aggregate survey data to Excel, CSV, ASCii, SPSS, Triple-S, or MarketSight. Filters and time restraints can be applied as needed.
  • Reports Repository
    All data exports are stored here. You can return to this tool at any time to retrieve previously exported data files.

2:  Filters

The Kinesis reporting tools allow users to create their own data filters and weights. Built-in tools include:

  • Logical Data Filters
    These data filters are built in the same manner as conditions and logical quotas. They can be applied to any data report. Please note that logical data filters are limited to referencing datapoints only. Should you need to filter based on ID, language, or other system field, please use a high speed data filter
  • High Speed Data Filters
    These filters are designed to be used with large data sets and can parse through respondents much faster than a logical data filter. High speed filters can also be used to pull back data based on RID, identifier, email, start time, end time, and language.
  • Data Weighting
    Data weights can be created and applied to topline and crosstab reports. Please note that only one data weight can be applied at a time.

3:  Adding, Removing, and Correcting Data

Kinesis has several tools that allow you to remove or change data. Please be aware, however, that once data is changed or removed, it may not be possible to recover the original data. Please use these tools with caution. Whenever possible, always download a full data file before updating/removing survey responses.

  • Drill Down
    Drill downs allows for the deletion or individual respondent records as well as the deletion/editing of individual responses. It is not advised to use this tool to update large quantities of data.
  • Batch Update Data
    The batch update tool is used to insert new respondents and data and also to update large amounts of data at one time. The process is done by downloading a csv data file, updating/adding records as needed, and reimporting it into the survey. It is recommended that you save your original download file in case of user error during the file update process.
  • Delete Responses
    This tool is used to remove all data collected from the survey, usually just before a soft launch.
  • Respondent Management
    The respondent manager houses a record of every respondent who has entered the survey. Respondent records can be deleted via this tool; deleting the respondent record also removes any associated survey data.
